Taffly

Taffly is a blue bottle fly piñata. While it may be unassuming at first, the Taffly is an incredibly useful piñata to have around and a staple to any garden. Not only can the Taffly be evolved into a Reddhott, multiplying its value immensely, but it can even make fertilizer, costing only a single piece of fruit per dosage.

Uses

Tafflies are able to produce fertilizer. When directed toward a fruit, they will spray green goo over it, turning it into fertilizer. This is the only way to get the fertilizer pile item in the garden. When selected with the A button, it will be transformed into the standard fertilizer bag, at which point it may be used in the same way as fertilizer bought from Costolot. Tafflies can turn fruit into fertilizer at a rate of one fruit per fertilizer dose. Using a Taffly to make fertilizer will earn the Taffly Fertilizer achievement in Viva Piñata.

In Pocket Paradise, Taffly instead eats the fruit and defecates the fertilizer. When tapped on the touch screen, the fertilizer will be added to the player's inventory and can be used from the menu. This is the only way to obtain fertilizer in Pocket Paradise, as it cannot be purchased.

Taffly can also be evolved into Reddhott. To do so, set a Taffly on fire somehow. There are multiple ways to do this, such as being hit by a fireweed, but the simplest method is to purchase the firebrand item from Costolot's Store. When it is on, direct the Taffly to the torch. It will circle a bit, but will eventually fly through the flame. Once it lands, it will begin rapidly hopping around in a panic. Douse the poor thing with a watering can, and it will turn into a Reddhott.

Evolving into Reddhott increases a Taffly's value by 7 times. Tafflies are low-level, simple to attract, can be hunted by Gretchen cheaply and quickly, and the firebrand is available at a very low level for a paltry 105 coins. These combined factors make evolving and selling Reddhotts among the most powerful money-making methods in every game in which they appear.

Trivia

• Storkos apparently gained the ability to fly thanks to a Taffly wandering into a teleportation device she had created.
• Taffly's fertilizer ability is a reference to the blue bottle fly's method of eating, in which it spits digestive fluids onto a piece of food in order to liquefy it, so that it may suck up the remains through its proboscis. This was the inspiration for the blue bottle's scientific name, Calliphora vomitoria
